MILW Mount Rainier
Title:  MILW Mount Rainier
Description:  Milwaukee Road Business Car named MOUNT RAINIER in the MILW coach yard in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was built by the Milwaukee Road in the mid-1940's as a tap lounge car named MONTANA and used on the Olympia Hiawatha. Upon introduction of the Super Dome Lounge cars in the mid-1950's, the tap lounge cars were retired from regular service. This car was converted to a business car with a spacious lounge and overnight accommodations, and named Montana. The open back platform was added in the early 1960s. Following dissolution of the company in the mid-1980s, the car passed into private ownership and ran under varied names including Mount Rainier and Prairie Rose. It subsequently was leased to the Wisconsin Central for executive use and whistle-stop campaigns for Presidents and Governors including George H. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Tommy Thompson. More recently, the railcar was included in excursions with the Milwaukee Road steam engine 261 out of Minneapolis. More information at this address: http://www.railcarmontana.com/history.html

MILW E7 19B
Title:  MILW E7 19B
Description:  Milwaukee Road E7 19B on the north side of Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on February 27, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in June 1946 (c/n 3242), classed as 20-EP on the Milwaukee Road, and traded to EMD for new power in late 1968 or early 1969. Photos of trains at this location would not heve been possible a year earlier or a year after this photo date. Previously the tracks and platforms were covered with a trainshed completed in 1925. The shed was in the process of being removed to allow construction of glass and steel high rise office buildings to be built on the air rights over the tracks.

MILW E7 19B
Title:  MILW E7 19B
Description:  Milwaukee Road E7 19B at Union Staion in Chicago, Illinois on February 27, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1946 (c/n 3242) on EMD Order E664A, MILW class 20-EP, it was traded to EMD for new power in 1968. It is seen here in charge of the daily un-named Train #23, departing Chicago at 3:20PM CST, arriving in Milwaukee at 4:45PM, making only one stop enroute at Glenview. This view also shows the preliminary demolition of the concourse of Union Station to make room for glass and steel office buildings on the air rights over the tracks. The first step was to remove the north side train sheds over the Milwaukee Road tracks, the only tenant on the north side of Union Station. This exposed waiting Milwaukee Road trains to both the elements and daylight for the first time since the station was completed in 1925.

MILW CFA16-4 24
Title:  MILW CFA16-4 24
Description:  MILW CFA16-4 24C at Bensenville, Illinois on January 9, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Fairbanks-Morse was an on-line industry for the Mllwaukee Road, so it was only natural for the road to acquire F-M products. In addition to purchasing F-M's first production diesel locomotive, an H10-44 switcher now at the Illinois Railway Museum, the road purchased 12 CFA16-4's and six CFB16-4 boosters. This unit was built at Beloit, Wisconsin, in July 1951 (c/n 16L482). classed as 16-FF on the MILW, and produced 1600 horsepower with eight cylinders (16 pistons) using an opposed piston prime mover design.

Title:  MILW CFA16-4 26A
Description:  MILW CFA16-4 26A at Bensenville, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built by F-M in Beloit, Wisconsin during August 1951 (c/n 16L485) it was traded to EMD in 1968. The Milwaukee Road had 12 of these cabs (#'s 23A,C - 28A,C) and six matching B-units (CFB16-4, #'s 23B - 28B). They saw extensive use on the Chicago Terre Haute & Southeastern, (Bensenville to Louisville, Kentucky), and up to Milwaukee. The Milwaukee directly served F-M's Beloit shops, and became the first customer and second largest owner of F-M products (152 units), behind only the PRR (200 units).

MILW CFA16-4 27C
Title:  MILW CFA16-4 27C
Description:  MILW CFA16-4 27C at Bensenville, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1951 (c/n 16L488), class 16-FF on the Milwaukee Road. It is seen smoking at the Milwaukee Road's Bensenville engine facility. According to Jim Boyd's book, Fairbanks-Morse Locomotives In Color (ISBN 1-878887-63-7), there are two possible explanations for the smoke. Unlike Alcos, which produced black smoke as a result of turbo-lag, the F-M's opposed piston (OP) diesels were normally aspired, using a Roots blower to pressurize the intake air.

While a properly maintained OP is a smooth and reliable engine, they tend to develop one distinctive characteristic: blue smoke on acceleration. This is the result of two potential causes, which are usually mixed to varying degrees. The first is lubricating oil. While the bottom crankshaft lives in an oil-filled crankcase (like an EMD), the top crankshaft is in a "dry sump", lubricated by pressurized internal passages and a surrounding spray of oil (like the top deck valve chamber of an EMD 567). When the OP idles or shuts down, some of the top sump lube oil will drip down the cylinder walls above the piston, and if the walls are scored or the piston rings are worn, the lube oil will get into the firing chamber and often pass unburned into the exhaust manifold, where it can ignite in a smoky pall when the engine is revved up. The other cause of smoke is the cooling water seeping into the cylinders from the seals where the injectors pass through the water jackets around the cylinder walls. This will also cause smoke. You could tell how well an OP is being maintained by its penchant for smoke upon acceleration.

Description:  The Milwaukee Road E9 35A at the Saint Paul Union Depot (SPUD) on February 5, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The appearance of Milwaukee Road at SPUD was unusual, since the Milwaukee had its own depot in Saint Paul. See Comment below by P. Nelson.

MILW E9 35A
Title:  MILW E9 35A
Description:  Milwaukee Road E9 35A at Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on February 27, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1956 as 205A (c/n 21611) on EMD Order 2075A, it was renumbered 35A and eventually became Amtrak 409 (First). It is seen here loading passengers as demolition of Union Station continues. The first part was the removal of the train sheds on the north side, exposing the Milwaukee trains to the elements for the first time since the station was completed in 1925. The next step is the removal of everything above street level to make room for glass and steel office buildings on the air rights.

Title:  MILW E9 36C
Description:  The Milwaukee Road E9 36C at Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on February 27, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in April 1961 (c/n 26566) on EMD Order 7596A. It is seen at Union Station in Chicago as the demolition of everything above street level continues. The first step was the removal of the train sheds over the Milwaukee Road's tracks which allowed (briefly) photos of trains in daylight. This will be covered over shortly by office buildings built on the air rights.

MILW E9 37A
Title:  MILW E9 37A
Description:  The Milwaukee Road E9 37A at Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on June 29, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in April 1961 (c/n 26567) on EMD Order 7596A, class 24-EP on the MILW, one source has it going to the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) as 37A, and it now resides at the Illinois Railway Museum. This is not the original platform lighting for Union Station, these are bare bulb work lights. At the time of this photo, the station and north platforms sheds were in the process of being torn down in preparation for construction of glass and steel office buildings over the air rights.
