Dates:1/1/1940 - 7/15/2012
Album Info:My dad, Tom Beckett Sr, was not a railfan, but he was an avid photographer of anything that caught his interest, everything from dogs to military aircraft, especially of WW II vintage; occasionally a train found its way in front of his camera. He passed away in March 2012 at the age of 79, at which time I came into possession of his photo collection. Much of this is slides, though he also shot a large volume of black and white, starting in the late 1940's. In this album we'll see some of his work as it turns up. Please note, in most cases, the dates are approximate, and sometimes they're wild guesses. Where I know it, it's correct; sometimes I can approximate by elements in the photo, or family history. Dad did not always mark info on his prints, though the slides most of the time have at least a month and year. He had a lot of slide film processed by private labs in New York, they did not always put a date on the mounts. If anyone looking at these photos can lend insight into a particular scene with a date or more info, please do so. Dad's not here to ask!!

Wide variety
Title:  Wide variety
Description:  Dad made a trip to Washington in January 1972, I dont recall why. He took the train down, rather than fly, for all the reasons people take the train. He got this shot looking from the concourse toward the trains shed, where he found Metroliners in Amtrak colors, as well as some still painted PC. Look to the far right-theres an MP 54 up to the bumping post, still in Tuscan red.

Metroliner
Title:  Metroliner
Description:  The Metroliner was still a fairly new thing in 1972, having gone into service only about four years earlier. They were popular, now that they had overcome some of the teething problems that come with new technology. A set painted for Amtrak is on the adjacent track. The bright colors would last a decade.

Station at night
Title:  Station at night
Description:  We lived in Little Neck NY when I was a kid, about a block from the LIRR Port Washington Branch. This was the view from my back steps. The view from my bedroom window was similar, just a little higher. I spent many a morning rush hour looking out at the parade of Pennsy inspired-and sometimes hand me down-equipment, everything from MP 54s to double deckers. In 1968 LIRR started to get the "new" cars-theyre all retired now-Budd M-1s. This shot, traken in 1972, shows a train of M-1s making its station stop. The station itself was built in 1897 if I recall, and still serves today.

Nice catch
Title:  Nice catch
Description:  I have mentioned that dad was not a railfan, and often the photos hed shoot were of a more artistic bent. Every once in a while, hed really nail something from a railfan perspective. This visit to the Spruce Falls paper mill was one of those times. He caught their plant switcher as he was going around the plant, getting this wonderful view of the unit.

Big paper
Title:  Big paper
Description:  Dad was a purchasing manager for the NY Times for a number of years, starting in the mid 70s. Hed occasionally go over to the plant where they printed most of the Sunday editions, in Carlstadt NJ. He always took photos, and we have a forklift unloading one of the 11 cars in the building that day. Those paper rolls weigh about 1800 lbs, and they got, I think, about 60 on a 50 foot car. Note the stenciling on the car for international and newsprint service only.

Title:  Grab shot from the water
Description:  Dad was on an around the island boat trip with some friends in August 1973, and was able to get some rail action, though not all of it well composed, probably due to being on the bounding main. He managed this shot of an Amtrak work train as it moved onto Hell Gate.

Cars on the water
Title:  Cars on the water
Description:  There was still some carfloat action in the New York harbor in the 70s. Dad caught this float in the Hudson near Battery Park. That's a Staten Island Ferry at right, beyond it is Governor's Island. Can't make out the name on the tugboat stack, but there are two EL boxcars on the barge, and one from MILW.

LV Pier
Title:  LV Pier
Description:  Dad took a boat trip with some friends, which allowed views of Manhattan that were off his normal rounds. He took advantage of the new viewpoint to get some interesting photos. One was this Lehigh Valley pier, near Christopher St. It is no longer in service, and at this point, the question is, will the pier fall into the river before the railroad itself goes under in a couple of years.

Standard Railroad of the World-or is it the navy??
Title:  Standard Railroad of the World-or is it the navy??
Description:  Another of the tumble down piers dad encountered on his trip around Manhattan, this one an ex Pennsy facility, also fallen on hard times like its LV neighbor a few blocks south. Like all the roads that came into the north Jersey terminals, the Pennsy had a substantial carfloat operation, though by this date, due to mergers and new traffic patterns, carfloats were almost a memory.

Wide open
Title:  Wide open
Description:  The swing bridge at Spuyen Duyvil is open to let dads trip pass through. The bridge stayed open most of the time, as there was a lot more marine traffic than trains at this time in history. Most of the rail customers had gone to trucks, or moved out of the city at this time, though there were still PC yards at 30th St and 60th St, the latter serving dads employer New York Times plant at 65th and West End Av. Theyd receiver cars here til the 80s when the yard finally closed. By then, the West End plant had moved to Jersey, but the Times would get cars at 60th St for transfer to trucks for delivery at the main press on 43rd St. The bridge would later serve for West Side access to Amtrak, which it does today.

Game of inches
Title:  Game of inches
Description:  The RS 3s that previously ran trains to Montauk were relatively short, and the FMs didnt MU, so there was not a problem trying to get a pair of units in the tail track there. But the C 420s were longer, and often ran in pairs on the weekend parlor car trains in the summer. It took just about every inch of track to get them to clear the switch at the station so they could get out and run around their train. A pair is just about making it in this shot on an August afternoon.

Title:  Now what
Description:  There is a pair of Centuries in the tail track at the east end of the station in Montauk, and now another train has arrived from Jamaica, and cant get their power turned. Guess the second train will have to back out and head to the yard, though its possible these units could tie on, and all four diesels back the train out. Looks like theres a conference going on in front of the 212 over who will do what.

High end
Title:  High end
Description:  The LIRR had run parlor cars to the east end for all of the 20th century, even fielding a through Pullman from Pittsburgh in the 1920s during the years it was a Pennsy subsidiary. As the 60s wore on, and many roads were eliminating their long distance trains, cars became available at bargain basement prices, and LIRR picked up quite a few from all over. Here we see the Montauk, formerly New Havens car Goshen Point, acquired in 1969. Also of note, at right, a partial view of one of the ex DLW Phoebe Snow lounges that ran on the LIRR til Metro North commandeered them for office cars.

Old station
Title:  Old station
Description:  I dont know the story on this car outside the old NYC station in downtown Syracuse. Dad was up for his 20th college reunion, and must have eaten here. Behind the restaurant is the old NYC station, which was on Erie Blvd. The passenger line was abandoned in the mid 50s, and the station was moved out to Dewitt Yard, where it remained for another 40 years til the new station was built at Carousel Mall. This station was the Greyhound depot at that time.

After the game
Title:  After the game
Description:  We frequently went to NY Yankee games-they were playing at Shea during the 1974 and 75 seasons while Yankee Stadium was being rebuilt-and it was an easy train ride from our house in Little Neck, or my grandmothers house in Manhasset. An eastbound train approches Shea Stadium after a game on a Sunday afternoon. The station had eight tracks, as it was originally built for the 1964/65 Worlds Fair, though after the fair closed, they were excess. The LIRR used the space for a test facility, since the Port Washington Branch was a good place to run test equipment. The three former MU trailers are parked at the end of one of the yard tracks, probably awaiting some kind of modification.

D&H station
Title:  D&H station
Description:  On the return from a family vacation to Montreal, we crossed Lake Champlain at Ticonderoga. We stopped at the D&H station here-I believe this is Westport, someone correct me if its not-for a little while to see if anything turned up. It didnt. I probably missed a chance at seeing the PAs as a result, though a freight with C 628s would have been a treat too.
