Santa Fe Fairbanks Morse H-1244T number 542, one of three sisters built by the Beloit-based locomotive manufacturer in 1956 to move passenger equipment in Santa Fes Chicago yards, backs the combined Super Chief/El Capitan streamliner into Chicago Union Station. 542 wears Santa Fes "Billboard" yellow and blue paint scheme used for freight locomotives. The F7 A-B-B-A units behind wear Santa Fes classic "Warbonnet" paint scheme used on passenger locomotives. 542 was scrapped in 1974 but sister 543 survives at the Illinois Railroad Museum. |

In March of 1971, EMD E-8 9936, still lettered for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and paired with a sister A-unit, speeds out of Chicagos Union Station with an afternoon passenger train. The EMD E-8 was a 2,250 horsepower A1A-A1A locomotive produced between 1949 and 1954 by GM's Electro-Motive division. 450 of these locomotives were produced. with 38 going to the CB&Q. 58 E-8s have been preserved, making the E-8 one of the best-preserved classes of first-generation diesel power in the U.S. |

GG-1 4876 -- a 1939 product of the Pennsylvania Railroads Altoona Shops -- heads south after leaving Elizabeth, New Jersey. Elizabeths famous speed-restricted S-curve lies just ahead. 4876 is one of the most famous GG-1s because in 1953 it crashed through the floor of Washingtons Union Station. The incident, which became known as the "Wreck of the Federal Express," was caused by malfunctioning braking equipment in the train. Miraculously, there were no fatalities. After the wreck, 4876 was simply cut up into pieces by PRR engineers, rebuilt, and returned to service. She served the Pennsylvania, Penn Central, Amtrak, and New Jersey Transit for many years afterward and was among a handful of GG-1s that ended the GG-1s reign in 1983, faithfully delivering passengers to and from Penn Station and South Amboy. This photo was taken in the Spring of 1983 -- a few months before the end. |

This illustrious 4-8-4 was one of four T-1 class 4-8-4s preserved by the Reading Railroad for excursion service in the famed "Rambles" of the early 1960s. She survives today, although is not currently operational. Photo by Stephen C. Baldwin. Fondness and enduring thanks to my Dad, Carl R. Baldwin (1931-2003), who did so much to encourage my railroad photography through numerous "train chases" in the 1970s through 1990s. Dad was with me on this trip of February 5th, 1972, one of the coldest days on record but one of the best for steam locomotive photography. |

In the early 1980s, GG-1 4877 was repainted in the classic PRR tuscan red gold pinstripe color scheme to commemorate the Gs many years of service. She continued to operate regular trains through 1983 and I caught up with her at Rahway early one Spring morning of that year. I only got two photos of 4877 moving; this one - the train is moving onto the main line to New York at Rahway -- and a shot in pastoral surroundings at South Amboy. In retrospect, I wish I had spent more time hunting her down in her last years of revenue service but Im lucky to have gotten the shots I got of her. 4877 was saved from the scrap heap by dedicated railroad historians but like many wonderful locomotives, she languished for years outdoors and her paint faded. Happily, she is well on the way toward a thorough cosmetic restoration thanks to the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey. Doesnt tuscan red Pennsy parlor car 1734 look great behind this classic electric? |
