Built as CB&Q SD7 404 in November 1952 (c/n 17400) on EMD Order 5140, it became BN 6052 and was retired in August 1983. This was one of 12 lightweight SD7's built for the Burlington for use on branch lines that could not support heavier locomotives. Although heavier than a GP7, it distributed the weight across two more axles, thus presenting a lighter load per axle to the rails. |

I'm still investigating this anomaly. |

Of all of EMD's poor designs, including the BL2, I think this unfortunate notch in the short hood of 6595 for the hand brake is the winner. How difficult would it have been to put a piece of sheet metal in the front to complete the facade and protect the hand brake from the elements. This had to be one of those Friday afternoon designs where the draftsman was concerned about going home for the weekend and took shortcuts to complete the job. End of rant. |

This particular unit picked up an extra electrical receptacle at the top of the short hood next to the class light. Here is the explanation, from former CB&Q electrician and later BN Diesel Superintendent Wesley Haas (by way of Hol Wagner): This is the 64 volt receptacle for the Lincoln Rotary, to run control circuits and anything that required the 64 volt power for the plow. The plow had a small diesel engine to supply 110 volts for interior lighting. |
