Description: |
Built in 1898, this Capital Traction Company streetcar ran along 7th Street from the wharves at the Potomac River to Boundry Street (now known as Florida Avenue), which at the time was the edge of the City of Washington. Washington banned overhead wires, so streetcars used an underground electrical conduit within the city and an aboveground wire outside city limits. |

Description: |
New Orleans Public Service ST. CHARLES line streetcars 806 and 965, and TULANE line trolley buses 1171, 1202 and 1189 were parked at Carrollton Station in May 1954. Car 806 had been built by Brill in 1922 and was scrapped in February 1955, less than a year after this photo was taken; while car 965 was built by Perley Thomas in 1924 and has never been retired. The buses had been built by the St. Louis Car Co. in early 1952 for the new TULANE line and was among the last NOPSI trolley buses in service. The 1171 was retired in December 1964, when diesel buses took over the last two trolley bus lines (TULANE and CITY PARK); but the other two were not retired until March 1967 and were among 33 SLC trolley buses sold for operation in Mexico City. The car had just turned left from Tulane Avenue onto South Liberty Street, and in two blocks it would turn right onto Canal Street. The bunting with the trophy on the corner building showed that it might have been SUGAR BOWL season! Much of the area in this photo is unrecognizable today; but the tall building in the background – the JUNG HOTEL at 1500 Canal Street – is still there. Car 812 had been built by the J.G. Description: |
New Orleans Public Service car 816 was inbound on the ST. CHARLES LINE at Lee Circle. This view is looking down Howard Avenue towards the Mississippi River. The white building on the left was the headquarters of the Standard Fruit & Steamship Co., and to the right of that was the Howard Memorial Library building which was then the offices of radio station WTPS. When this photo was taken only about 20 of the 800-series cars were still around, as most had been scrapped because many NOPSI streetcar lines were discontinued after WWII. The 816 operated until the original CANAL LINE closed in 1964, and was scrapped that June. |
