We got brave (you notice we hadn't been riding the vestibules so far- that's why the pictures are thru the windows!) and strolled up to the head end as 99 stopped at SLO for crew change and servicing. Gee, one of the yardmen is standing at the water hose cart, ready to add water to the units, I guess, if needed. Of the 2 or 3 folks standing and chatting, the late Gerry Salsig is the one facing towards the eng, right hand on hip, and left hand holding his camera bag and whatever. So, I guess that's my "Kodak" camera bag and notepad on the ground between me and them. |

Constructed as a "temporary" structure to serve the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition, Southern Pacifics Third and Townsend Streets depot lasted into the mid-1970s. It was SPs intention to eventually build a permanent "downtown depot" at the foot of Market Street, but this never came about. By the 1970s the station building was so dilapidated that SP was finally forced to replace it - with a structure one block south at Fourth and Townsend. By June 1975, the old station had had its tracks removed, Fourth Street has been extended through the old platforms, and preparations were under way to raze the structure. Over the years, this was the home of a daily parade of commuter trains, as well as the famed "Coast Daylight" and so many other "name trains" ("The Noon Daylight," "The Del Monte," etc.). |

For many years, Tucumcari was an important junction between the Southern Pacific and the Rock Island. The SP from El Paso connected with the CRI&P line to Kansas City and Chicago to form the Giolden State Route, and the Rock Island also had a second line that ran east through Amarillo to Memphis which it called the Choctaw Route. Up until 1962, the SP had a branch that ran northwest from here to Dawson, NM. |
