ALX 868         
My research yeilded no clues as where ALX 868 came from. It's painted yellow and black. An obvious "sold for parts".

Jeremy MacPherson General I believe that SP&S sent it back to ALCO as a trade in and that PGE then bought it from ALCO as a part source. The ALX reporting marks are apparently ALCO. 10/26/2009 12:13:23 AM
S.L. Dixon General You all are in the ball park. Jeremy has the best summerization. There are still puzzles that will never be known. ALX doesn't exist as an AAR reporting mark. The last paint scheme of the SP&S FA's had only a 6" strip of black paint that run along the bottom frame and this unit has 2-3 feet of black paint. Why would ALCO do that? It had to have another stop for a year or two before ending up in Squamish. Love a puzzle. 10/26/2009 4:01:18 AM

Carroll Cameron General According to RAILINC, ALX is a reporting mark for BRC Rail Car Service and the unit is described as Private Owner - Freight Equipment. I believe ALX was assigned to the unit by SP&S to denote that it is not part of the SP&S system. RAILINC is a N.A. Leo Ames General I'm over a decade late for this conversation, but can clear up some of the mystery. Circa 1972, Pacific Great Eastern was power short and leased a variety of power that they subsequently purchased. This included their Fairbanks Morse H10-44, the L&HR C420's, a pair of LS&I RS3's, and this SP&S FA2. Alas though, the 868's 244 suffered a major engine failure on her first PGE trip and the later purchase was just as a parts source to support the RS3 and RS10 fleets. 10/2/2020 3:46:31 PM
Leo Ames General Double checked some information I had. I show her being leased by Alco to PGE in 1970 and purchased by PGE later that same year. Looks like a year or so later, she's pretty well been picked over. 10/2/2020 3:52:31 PM
