L&N Last Run
This somewhat-fuzzy Instamatic shot recorded the last departure of a regularly-scheduled L&N train from New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. It was 5PM as the PAN-AMERICAN pulled out behind E8's 785 and 786, both former Frisco units purchased in 1965, with baggage car 1484, heavyweight coach 2555, lightweight coaches 3254 and 3250, lunch-counter/diner/lounge 2801, and 6-6-4 sleeper SHORT LEAF PINE, all for Cincinnati; plus coach 3255 for Jacksonville. L&N was one of few U.S. railroads that ran sleepers with open sections up until the beginning of Amtrak. The commemorative lettering on the nose and side of the 785 was added by railfan Jim Selzer of Slidell, Louisiana. The last southbound PAN-AMERICAN arrived at 11:25 the next morning behind E7A's 779 and 780, and they deadhead out later that day with all of the remaining L&N cars.

Bernie Feltman General The "Last Run" lettering, while at least being on the unit, could've been a tad better with a formal banner or sign. Still, a great photo depicting a very sad scene 4/1/2014 7:18:53 AM
