PRR 6779, M-1B, 1956
Miscellanea. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken near Leolyn, Pennsylvania, on 2 December 1956. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6779 and #6816. Both are Class "M" (4-8-2) "Mountain" locomotives. #6779 is an M-1B built by the Lima Locomotive Works as an M-1A during March of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B in December of 1948, and retired in September of 1959. #6816 is an M-1 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1926 and retired in June of 1959. They're pushing a northbound coal train on a very cold day. Note the N-5 cabin car: it's lucky number 477777! This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-2).
