As the railroads got out of the passenger business through the 1960s, many passenger diesels became available. UP had a sizeable fleet of E units, both As and Bs. Seeing a bargain, the Northwestern acquired a group of E8Bs, and under the supervision of Chief Mechanical Officer M H Crandall, rebuilt them with cabs and put them into Chicago commuter service. Heres the first one, at Northwestern Station, waiting to back onto an outbound train.
