CB&Q #236 SILVER VERANDA
CB&Q 24 seat dome-25 seat club lounge-5 seat day use drawing room (1DR)-11 seat parlor-blunt end observation #236 SILVER VERANDA. Built by the Budd Company in September 1956 in Lot #9652-169, 1 of 2 such cars (#235 SILVER CHATEAU and #236) built in that Lot for the DENVER ZEPHYR; the Lot was ordered in February 1955 and both cars were delivered in September 1956. These cars were planned to be renumbered as BN #1286 (#235) and #1287 (#236), but these numbers were not applied before the cars were sold to Amtrak in 1971 as #9330 (#235) and #9331 (#236). The ex-#235 SILVER CHATEAU was wrecked on train #57, the southbound FLORIDIAN, at New Castle, AL, on January 16th, 1977, and was subsequently sold in November 1977 to Tuman Demolition in Indianapolis, who used it for a short time as an office before scrapping it in 1979. Meanwhile, the ex-#236 SILVER VERANDA was retired at an unknown date and was stored until being listed for sale in March 1993, and it was acquired by BN. It was initially stored in Kansas City, and after the BNSF merger, it was moved to storage at the former AT&SF shops in Topeka as BNSF #20. In 2015, it was finally rebuilt at the Topeka Shops as BNSF #35/#800883 CANYON VIEW. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a duplicate 35mm slide, brand is unknown. Photographer is unknown; date, month, and year are approximate.
