"Railroad" Centennial Album, Plate #10, 1946         
Here is the tenth of 36 plates constituting the "Centennial Album of Pennsylvania R.R. Photos and Prints." It was published in the April 1946 issue of "Railroad" magazine, page 18. Etched originally by Devereux Dei. Caption: "Portage Railroad. In canal-boat days, the crest of the Alleghenies, west of Hollidaysburg, was breasted by a double-tracked rail system thirty-six miles long, making use of ten inclined planes. Westbound passengers were eased into the valley of the Conemaugh above Johnstown to continue their packet journey by that river and the Allegheny into Pittsburgh."
