Here is the twelfth of 18 photos by Fred McLeod that are included in a souvenir brochure entitled "Horseshoe Curve; Pennsylvania Railroad; Altoona, Pa." Photo Caption: "Upgrade and Downgrade." The "upgrade" train is a mixed-cargo freight powered by a "J" Class (2-10-0) "Texas." The "downgrade" train consists of fully-loaded hopper cars, and its descent down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receivisng Yards in Altoona is assisted by an "I-1S" Class (2-10-0) "Decapod." Note that the caboose is the last car in the train. Signal Bridge #2418 is also visible in the smoky distance. |
