PRR 5832, BH-50, c. 1954
Aziz. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken just West of the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1954. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5832 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5832 was constructed in February of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're serving as rear-end helpers on a freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Partially visible at the left is PRR N-8 cabin car #478171.
