PRR Well Car 470037
Pennsylvania Railroad well hole flat car 470037 was on the Louisville & Nashville’s Semmes Track in front of the station at Pascagoula, Mississippi. The car was loaded with a large ship’s propeller and had been brought here by Mobile-Gulfport local freight No. 43. It was consigned to Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation and would be shunted to Ingalls’ original yard on the east bank of the Pascagoula River via the City Spur. The 470037 was one of 17 PRR class F37b well cars (470023-470039) built by the railroad between 1948 and 1952. The center of well cars was open to allow a tall load to be carried as low as possible, minimizing clearance issues.
