Amtrak SSB1200 555 at 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 8, 1987, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Amtrak 555 was built in May 1953 as AT&SF SW9 2422 (c/n 18088), renumbered to 1422, rebuilt at San Bernardino to SSB1200 1222, traded to Amtrak for SDP40F's.
Amtrak 7 at Beech Grove, Indiana on February 4, 1987, photo by Chuck Zeiler. If the serial number listed with photos of this locomotive is correct, then it was built by GE in May 1941 as a 45 tonner for the US Army as number 7078 (c/n 13052) and assigned to the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant B-5 at Kingsbury, Indiana. Note the air whistle on the cab front by the exhaust stack, and a running board full of support equipment.

This set arrived in 1975, numbered (from this end) 59, 82, 81, 80, 58. The first and fifth units were power-coaches with 44 seats per car, the second and fourth units were coaches with 72 seats per unit, and the third unit had 60 seats and a bar-grill for food service. The bridge in the background is the ICG's Saint Charles Air Line.

Number 61 was built in 1973 by ANF-Frangeco and the original trainset was known as RTG-1, consisting of 61 (ex-A1, 48-seat power-coach), 92 (ex-A2, 80-seat coach), 91, (ex-A3, Buffeteria-coach, 44 coach seats and 24 seats in the food service section), 90 (ex-A4, 80-seat coach), and 60 (ex-A5, 48-seat power-coach).

Amtrak RTG Turbo 64 on the Milwaukee Road at Paulina Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The signal bridge was (at one time) the Chicago Transit Authority's bridge for the old Met Northwest branch tracks of the Logan Square and Humbolt Park routes, abandon around 1955. The bridge was retained for use as a signal bridge only.
Amtrak Ram Turbine Gas (RTG-4) 65 and GP7 760 under the ICG's Saint Charles Air Line near 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in 1975, this was one of four ANF sets delivered that year to Amtrak. This set consisted of numbers 65 (44 seat power coach), 85 (72 seat coach), 84 (60 seat coach with bar-grill service), 83 (72 seat coach) and 64 (44 seat power coach). By 1981 the RTG's were withdrawn from service and placed in long-term storage. Please see Comments below, Thanks Jim.

Amtrak F40PH 224 at San Diego, California on February 11, 1984, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the second depot built by the Santa Fe in San Diego. This one was built between 1914-15 at a cost of $300,000.00, designed by the San Francisco firm of Bakewell and Brown. By 1971 the entrance patio was demolished for a parking lot and there was talk by the AT&SF of tearing down the depot. Community opposition stopped this move, and the structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Note the AT&SF cross logo in the dome.
