A CN unit train of tank cars parallels Broad St., passes the former C&NW depot and freight house, and approaches Washington Ave. as it heads south at Oshkosh, WI on 28 Jan. '18. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 on Broad St. between Washington Ave. and Merritt Ave. at a cost $15,000, it opened on 1 Dec. ’84. The depot was more ornate when completed, some of its interesting architectural elements have been removed over the years. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. The depot is currently used by Clarity Care. Train had three locomotives, CN 2612, CN 5731, and CN 8877.

A CN unit train of tank cars parallels Broad St., crosses Wagoo Ave., and approaches Otter St. as it heads south via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 28 Jan. '18. The 2013 bascule bridge over the Fox River, built to replace the 1899 swing bridge, is visible in the background. Train had three locomotives, CN 2612, CN 5731 and CN 8877.
A CN through freight rests along Hwy. 41 at Snells, WI on 28 Jan. '18. I can't tell if it has halted along the former SOO main line or the former C&NW main line, probably the latter. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.
