CR C30-7 6607 works Selkirk yard in December, 1977.

CGAL arrives at Sayre. It will drop its train here as it runs south to Athens to cross over and get into the yard area.

This going away shot of CGAL shows it on the connection from the ex EL Southern Tier Line(in the foreground) to the Lehigh Line. The steel bridge it is about to cross is NY 17. The train will be in Sayre PA on the ex LV in a few minutes. It will work the yard there, picking up and setting out for RELCO, a contract freight car rebuilder working out of the ex LV shop, and for local WAIT 2, which works the Ithaca Branch, the remaining portion of the LV Main and Passenger Main to Ithaca via Van Etten Jct. Despite an easy connection here, the EL and LV did not interchange at this location as a rule, and this was used mostly for detour moves prior to Conrail. Also note: see the comment below regarding the Elmira, Cortland & Northern, an LV component whose isolated track in Elmira was reached via trackage rights over the Erie/EL via this connection.

Well, maybe not paradise. But it does make for a good photo. TV 301 with 160 platforms of APL containers approaches the PA 191 bridge in Great Bend, a short ride up the river remaining to Binghamton.

and still at it. TV 301 rolls over the 1848 built Starrucca Viaduct, and is now on its last lap into Binghamton.

TV 301 arrives at Port Jervis and will change crews. The new crew will take the 195 APL platforms to Gang Mills, where the next crew will get on to run to Buffalo.

Moodna Creek, for which the viaduct is named, is a small waterway at the west end of the bridge, just before it crosses NY 94. At this point, the tracks are 193 feet above the creek bed, with TV 301 riding them.

TV 301 is stretched out across Moodna Viaduct, one of the three great steel bridges on the Erie, as it makes its way toward Port Jervis and Buffalo.

TV 301 rolls off the big through truss bridge over the East Branch of the Delaware. The clearance above the double stacks shows why the Erie was the preferred high and wide route in the east.

TV 301 rounds the big curve near Cochecton at MP 131 alongside NY 97. It was a great place to shoot a train, through it works better with two or three units. Four is really one too many.

BUOI rolls its 100 cars past a pair of semphores between Cameron and Rathbone. The one it is passing has dropped to approach, as the signal on track 1 points upward.

One of the things I enjoy about the west end of the Tier is some of the wider vistas between Hornell and Letchworth Park, such as this scene from the NY 70 overpass near Canaeraga.BUOI rolls east with 100 cars.

BUOI rolls east past a stubble cornfield near Arkport as it heads for Hornell, Upstate NY can be beautiful in the winter as the low light and golden colors warm the scene-if you can stand the cold temperatures. It was in the mid 20s this day.

Or is it?? Theres still a lot of snow pack on Gulf Summit as TV 301 rolls 160 stack platforms west at Schoolhouse Road in the Town of Sanford, having just crested the grade. It will be on Starrucca in about ten minutes, and in Binghamton in about 45

An eastbound drifts downhill toward Altoona past the park at the curve. Conrail often mixed in 4 axle power on many trains, even on heavy grades. Odd as it sounds, seeing a GP 38 in the Alleghenies was not that uncommon. Check out the Reading hoppers, many of which lasted well into the 90's in coal service.

BUOI passes the Erie station at Hornell, as seen from what was once the Allegany Division yard. Its now a shopping center, with a P&C and Family Dollar, among other things, and this view is no longer possible.

Of course, now that the day is over, the sun finally comes out! Don'O mind the cars trailing along, that's a light engine move, ENG-303 passing MP 122 at 18:12.

CR 6607 and NS 6114 lead w/b OIEN into Emmaus, PA. Back then, NS power was somewhat interesting.
