Chicago, South Shore & South Bend #705 & 704 rest a moment at the Michigan City shoips area. These Alco-GE R-2 boxcabs were purchased from NYC in the late 1950's and they along with their 3 other sisters helped to handle the increasing freight load. No photographer's name was given with the original negative used for the print.
The two former NYC Alco-GE R-2 boxcabs purchased by the Chicago, South Shore & South Bend were critical in moving freight during the late 1950's and 1960's. The negative is from an unknown photographer.

Built by Alco/GE for the New York Central as their R2 class #1240 in June of 1931 (bldr #68268/11191), it was renumbered 340 in August 1936 and sold to CSS&SB in 1955. It was then rebuilt to serve the CSS as 754 in 1956 and finally scrapped in April 1976. Unknown photographer on a fan trip took this photo as the unit stopped near Wagner Road in Porter County, IN.
Ex-NYC #340 heads up what appears to be a fan trip. Built by Alco and delivered to the NYC as #340 in June of 1931, it was transferred to the Chicago South Shore electrified line in the mid-1950's. No exact date or photographer was listed for this photo so an approximate date was used.
