ICG Renovated Station

ICG 1 brings up the rear of Amtrak's Shawnee on a gray November day. This was during the period when Amtrak required all cars in consist to wear their colors. Note the modified IC "Green Diamond" treatment on the rear platform railings.

A few passengers were out on the open platform of Illinois Central Gulf office car 1 as it was leaving New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on an industrial development special bound for Baton Rouge. The two locomotives were the railroad’s second Bicentennial GP38 1776 (ex-9503) and GP38-2 9615, the JOHN A. LOGAN.

The officers of the Illinois Central Gulf take a tour of the railroad between Chicago and New Orleans. Here, the train has just departed Central Station headed south. Although the company at this time is still officially the Illinois Central Gulf, plans were already underway to spin off the railroad from IC Industries and rename the railroad the Illinois Central. All this would come to pass a few months later in 1988.

Illinois Central Gulf rail detector car (RDC) number 2 was on the main line at the Central Avenue grade crossing, just west of New Orleans.

Illinois Central Gulf RAIL DETECTOR CAR 3 was parked at the railroad's MAYS YARD just west of New Orleans. Even though it was a truck, with Mississippi license plate P20 3099, the railroad still called it a CAR !

Illinois Central Gulf office car No. 6 was bringing up the rear of Amtrak's northbound PANAMA LIMITED at Carrollton Junction in New Orleans. The train had just began operating with Amfleet cars, and today the little 1300-series Ambag was placed behind the coaches instead of at the front of the train so it could act as a buffer with the office car. The old type diaphragm on ICG 6 could damage the lightweight diaphragms on the Amfleet cars; but the little baggage cars didn't have any diaphragms and could be coupled to anything. The office car had been built by American Car & Foundry in 1915 as IC 16.

This shot of the Columbus & Greenville roundhouse in Columbus included DRS-6-4-1500 603 on the left and former Illinois Central Gulf office car 9 in the center. Car 9 was later fixed up as CAGY 1 KING COTTON.

This view of the Columbus & Greenville yard at Columbus included two pieces of former Illinois Central Gulf equipment. In the center was CAGY SW1 509, previously ICG 608 and originally IC 9023; while in the roundhouse was former ICG office car 9, which would become CAGY 1 KING COTTON.
