Cumberland City Turn
Title:  Cumberland City Turn
Description:  The Cumberland City turn approaches the Cumberland River drawbridge at Clarksville. This bridge has an interesting history. In 1906 the locomotive, tender, mail car, and baggage car of a northbound passenger train went into the river when the engineer ran through the open draw. A similar instance occurred in 1947 involving a local freight train that was dropping a cut off cars at the old Clarksville freight depot (which was located on the opposite side of the track from where I am standing).

Description:  The daily RJ Corman turn from Guthrie, KY starts its return trip north as it passes through downtown Cumberland City. The line parallels the Cumberland River most of the way between here and Clarksville, TN. The river is on the opposite side of the tree line from the train.

Cumberland City Turn
Title:  Cumberland City Turn
Description:  The daily RJ Corman turn from Guthrie, KY pops out of the tunnel at Palmyra. This is the only tunnel on the Memphis Line. The L & N increased the height of the tunnel in the 1960's for tri-level auto racks. This was done not by raising the tunnel ceiling, but lowering the tunnel floor. By doing so the railroad avoided disturbing the concrete lining of the tunnel. Daylighting the tunnel was considered, but ultimately abandoned due to there being a cemetery on the top of the hill above the tunnel.
