CRIP 4-8-4 #5027 - Chicago, Rock Island, & Pacific
Title:  CRIP 4-8-4 #5027 - Chicago, Rock Island, & Pacific
Description:  Here is another example of a 1930 Alco-Schenectady built 4-8-4 Northern type locomotive for the Rock Island RR. According to Drury (1993) in Steamlocomotives.com, this design's size and weight limited their operation to the Chicago-Des Moines corridor, the Chicago-Dalhart, Texas line, and the segment between Herington, Kan and El Reno, Okla. Later bridge-strengthening allowed these heavyweights to pull freights and passenger trains to Denver, Fort Worth, Tucumcari, and Minneapolis. Specifics - 69" drivers, 250 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, 434,000 lb engine weight, 66,620 lb tractive effort. Wesley Krambeck photo

Title:  CRIP 0-6-0 #249 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Description:  Long before the U28B carried the number 249, this little 0-6-0 switcher held it. McCleary Jr - unknown location (possibly Rock Island shops) & date is approximate

CRIP 4-4-0 #609 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Title:  CRIP 4-4-0 #609 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Description:  Built by the Rock Island shops in 1890, this cute 8 wheeler was a B-16 class locomotive with 68" drivers. It could develop a modest 160 psi boiler pressure for its 18"x24" cylinders. The engine weight was 107,300 lb and it could apply a modest tractive effort of 15,552 lbs but enough to move traffic at the turn of the century. Note the crew member standing by the front coupling - must be setting it for the next linkup . . . or cleaning dead cows from the "cow catcher"! Month and day in 1933 is approximate - unknown photographer.

Title:  CRIP 4-4-2 #1004 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Description:  It appears to be near the end of this little 4-4-2 Atlantic style locomotive built by Also-Brooks in February of 1901 (serial #3766). Specs - class A-24, 78.5" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 20.25x26" cylinders, engine weight of 162,000 lb, modest tractive effort of 23,089 lb.
