Description:  Here is an original photo left in its sepia color of the 1909 Alco-Brooks 4-6-2 Pacific #421. Originally it carried the number CIL 401 but was renumbered in 1911 to CIL #421. Note on the back states that it is heading up train 6. Specs - serial #46235, class K-3, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 22x28" cylinders, engine weight of 205,000 lb, tractive effort of 31,559 lb. The class was later superheated and eventually all three in the class were off the roster by 1947. CIL #421 was retired on 10/4/1041. No photographer listed.

Description:  Caught sitting at the 63rd Street passenger platform is Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville 4-6-2 Pacific #440. This Monon loco was built by Alco-Brooks in September of 1912 and served well for nearly 35 yeats before being bumped out of the roster when diesels came in under President John Walker Barriger III master upgrade. The loco was sold for scrap in April of 1948. Specs - serial #51674, class K-5, 73" drivers, 185 psi boiler pressure, 23x28" cylinders, engine weight of 227,000 lb, tractive effort of 31,900 lb. According to the Monon Technical & Historical Society as well as www.SteamLocomotives.com, the loco was retired in 1947, contrary to the date for the photo as listed by the photographer, C.W. Cassidy, as 1948. I will be posting it with an approximate date in 1947. Specifics - 73" drivers, 190 psi boiler pressure, 26x28" cylinders, engine weight of 285,000 lb, tractive effort of 41,875 lb.

In earlier photographs of this locomotive the generator is mounted ahead of the stack, here it looks to be back near the cab. The gondola appears to be MEC 8200 but the origional photo is rather fuzzy and I dont think MEC had any gondolas in this number range... /DL

Title:  MEC 470
Description:  MEC’s #470 was the last active steam on the Maine Central. In this 1938 scene 470 is at the Lewiston Upper platform headed west. C2016 this locomotive has been purchased by the New England Steam Corp from the City of Waterville for eventual restoration at Washington Jct outside of Ellsworth. Much more info is on line at: http://www.newenglandsteam.org/ MEC 470 was a MEC Class C3 built at Schenectady by ALCO in June 1924. It made the last run on the Maine Central dead heading back to Waterville after it’s last pubilc run on the Main Line between Portland and Bangor. #470 was retired in June of 1954. It went on display in Waterville October of 1962. Alco builders number 65555. Cyls 25x28 with 73 inch drivers. (month and date are correct) /DL

Description:  Nice photo by A. L. Douchette of the last 4-6-2 Pacific built by Alco-Schenectady in 1924 for Maine Central. A note on the back of the photo states "#470 The l.ast steam engine to run on the MECRR - from Portland to Bangor 6/13/54 (last passenger run)." Specs - class C-3, 73" drivers, 185 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine wt 268,300 lb, tractive effort of 37,697 lb. Rebuilt in 1933 by the MEC shops. Now on display in Waterville, ME. UPDATE - thanks to Jerry LaBoda (see comment below), this loco is now under restoration with its future as a beautiful operating locomotive again!

Description:  Personal PC. Here is a postal card entitled "The Iron Horse In Retirement." Postmarked: 1 August 1961. Sent to me by James W. Young, a chemist at the PRR's Altoona Test Plant. Caption On Reverse: "This is the last steam locomotive run on the Maine Central Railroad. Final trip was Portland to Bangor and return on June 13, 1954. No. 470 is a Big C Class Pacific type built by Alco in 1924. It had 30 years of service, being replaced by modern diesels." Photo by Luther S. Phillips.
