Old CIRR chip hopper
Title:  Old CIRR chip hopper
Description:  It is lettered for current owner Georgia Pacific but this chip hoppers bears all the markings of the old CIRR. Note the red over blue cross logo and the "Better by a dam site" slogan. A pretty neat play on words. They were of course referring to the dam built near Columbia AL about the same time the CIRR came into existance.

Title:  NS coal train power
Description:  Some of the latest coal train power at Hilton GA is seen tied up on the passing track. With the influx of additional power to the GWI lines in the area it will be interesting to see if NS power is used for Hilton and Dothan coal trains or if GWI power will start handling them from Albany GA.

Old Albany and Northern trackage
Title:  Old Albany and Northern trackage
Description:  This section of Albany and Northern trackage has recently been relaid. For a view of how it looked in 2004, look here: http://bsmith3608.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3023208 These photos are looking west toward Albany and my back is to Cordele. The newly relaid trackage extends to about the end of the peanut mill seen on the right and stub goes a few feet further east while a spur branches off to the left. A close up can be seen here: http://bsmith3608.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3023184 I didn't have time to see how far the spur goes or to what industry. The A&N ended up in the Southern Railway camp. Todays NS still operates the busy GS&F district through Cordele and CSX operates the even busier Fitzgerald sub through Cordele.

Close up of end of track on recently relaid Albany and Northern line
Title:  Close up of end of track on recently relaid Albany and Northern line
Description:  This is a close up of the end of track on the recently relaid old Albany and Northern trackaage at Cordele. The roadbed of the old A&N to Albany continued straight, toward the clump of trees, while the spur to the left is a new addition. I didn't have time to see where the new spur goes but would assume a new industry. Always good to see former trackage relaid....even if for a short distance.

Looking north
Title:  Looking north
Description:  This is the view looking north at Ft Valley toward Macon. The track curving away from the mainlines on the far left is the former Southern line to Atlanta. It has been cut back to Roberta GA for several years and is now operated by a short line. Here is a photo from a Southern employee timetable from 1932 that shows when this line was operated all the way to Atlanta: http://bsmith3608.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=640413 The other tracks from the left are the southbound mainline, northbound mainline, passing track, and a track formerly known as the Valley Peach track. Ft Valley is where the lines from Albany and Columbus come together, to my back in this photo, and continue north to Macon. The blue building to the left of the mains is the Blue Bird bus company and the origin of many school buses.

Looking south
Title:  Looking south
Description:  This is the view looking south at Ft Valley. The local from Americus, which will swap train with the local from Macon and then return to Americus, has dropped their train on the northbound mainline and the power, with headlights on, is backing up on the passing track to pick up some cars to go north. Local locomotives are parked next to the old freight depot on the house track. The southbound main is visible on the right and in the distance the signals governing Columbus Jct. can be seen. The track to Columbus can be seen veering from the southbound main while straight ahead the line continues to Americus/Albany. The line veering off the passing track just past the street crossing is the line that runs behind the freight depot and continues to Perry GA. Various crossovers complete the photo.

Looking south
Title:  Looking south
Description:  We are again looking south at Ft Valley GA. The line going straight goes to Americus/Albany while the line to Columbus can be seen veering from the southbound mainline in the distance. The line to Perry GA can be seen veering from the passing track just over the street crossing. The old freight depot is on the left while the old Ft Valley tower and passenger depot is on the right. The lines from Albany and Columbus come together in Ft Valley, as seen in this photo, and continue to Macon. Branch lines to Perry and Roberta, now operated by short lines, complete the scene.

Interesting place for a derailer
Title:  Interesting place for a derailer
Description:  I think once it gets here, it's too late. Actually this track used to extend further and tie into the main track that went to Columbus. It seems the company no longer receives carloads of farm chemicals so the switch was taken out and the track to the clear point. Trackage was left beyond that point and it included the derailer. I guess they figured they would leave the derailer for whatever reason.

Northbound
Title:  Northbound
Description:  A northbound NS manifest is seen passing the spur that led into the former Georgia Pacific plywood plant in Vienna. The plant sat right between the NS and CSX Fitzgerald subs and the track actually connected the 2 subs so that the plant had access from both railroads. GP sold the plant several years ago to a company (Rosewood Plywood I think was the name) but recently it has been shutdown. Another casualty of our "recovering" economy.

Rather sad
Title:  Rather sad
Description:  This note, and several others, is attached to the old Southern freight depot in McDonough GA. It appears the depot saw life after it was closed as part of a hardware business. It doesn't appear to be used now and looks to be going downhill slowly. McDonough seems to be a town that takes pride in it's history so hopefully someone will step forward (soon) to preserve this great relic from the past.

NS training center
Title:  NS training center
Description:  Seen here is the NS training center at McDonough GA. NS trains engineers, conductors, signal personnel, shop personnel, and any number of other crafts here. I actually attended this center in 1981 as a clerk/operator trainee. I was there for 4 weeks. Back then there were only 2 tracks going into the center. It would appear it has been added onto. The training center is located about 2 miles from the NS mainline through McDonough and on a line that formerly went from McDonough to Griffin GA. That line has now been abandoned to Griffin and the track only extends a bit past the training center.
