BNSF 7770
Title:  BNSF 7770
Description:  It was cold enough during the previous night's storm for the snow to get all the way down to Devore, so this dusting at Blue Cut is not a surprise, but is still a welcome sight. With 85 loads and 15 empties (at 11284 tons and 6811' with locos; 6308' without locos), BNSF Railway train M-BARSBD1-09A (Regular Merchandise; Barstow CA to San Bernardino CA) passes through photogenic Blue Cut with, for power, a quartet of ES44DCs (7770, 7747, 7771 and 7760) and 3GS21C-DE switch engine 1310 up front, and ES44DCs 7719 and 7772 on the rear.

BNSF Signal
Title:  BNSF Signal
Description:  This old Santa Fe searchlight signal, controlling Cajon Pass' original line near Highway 138, is dusted with snow for its last winter, as a new tri-light signal is being installed just out of this frame. While Winter Storm Nemo was dumping 12"-24" of snow on the northeastern U.S., a cold storm visited southern California but left not much more than a dusting of snow on Cajon Pass. Five minutes after taking this photo, a westbound BNSF train passed, and there was noticeably less snow on the targets even after that short a time. The searchlights will be missed ...

BNSF 7063
Title:  BNSF 7063
Description:  BNSF Railway train M-SDGBAR1-05A (Regular Merchadise; San Diego to Barstow) holds the middle main, train Z-LACCHI7-06L (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal; Los Angeles to Chicago) overtakes it. The M-SDGBAR would hold this position for over an hour as various BNSF and UP trains leapfrogged ahead of it. This location, Lugo, on Cajon Pass east side, is also the end of triple track, which is why the lowly train from San Diego was held so long for higher priority trains.

BNSF 7112
Title:  BNSF 7112
Description:  Heading from Pier T in Long Beach, California to Clovis, New Mexico, should have been an easy task for BNSF Railway train S-LBTCLO1-06A, as three-fourths of its power were brand-new GE ES44C4 diesels (7112, 7109 and 7113, along with Dash 9-44CW 4902). But, unfortunately, the train became stuck at Alray on southern California's Cajon Pass. (Alray was the location of Cajon Pass' two tunnels, which were removed a few years prior. The first tunnel's portal was just to the left in this image.) So, helpers were dispatched from San Bernardino (BNSF 4657 and 5121, symboled as K-SBDSBD1-06A) to help shove this train over the hill. The train started moving just after this image was made, and it flew up the hill with the additional power. At Martinez Siding, just past Summit, the helpers were cut off and the S-LBTCLO1-06A continued on its way east to Barstow, where the power was cut off and replaced with BNSF 5316, BNSF 4529, BNSF 735, CSXT 9029 and BNSF 5247. Apparently, the shop forces in Barstow wanted to check this power out to discover the problem - although, officially, the delay was caused by "train meets", which is kind of odd on a triple-tracked mainline!

Description:  Its journey is just about done, as engineer Ed Dickens brings Santa Fe 3751 (owned by the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society) to a stop on the old Santa Fe turntable at Amtrak's Redondo Junction engine facility near downtown Los Angeles. The 1927-built Baldwin locomotive took part in the festivities at San Bernardino Railroad Days over the weekend, and will shortly be placed back on its storage track to have its fires dropped and some tender loving care given to it before the next steam up on May 11th (for National Train Day at Los Angeles Union Station).

Odd Coupler Knuckle on IAIS 716
Title:  Odd Coupler Knuckle on IAIS 716
Description:  In over forty years of railfanning, I've seen a few strange things ... And this is the latest. I assume that it was meant for some duty other than coupling to another coupler. Photo taken on railroad property with permission and while wearing required safety gear (PPE).

Description:  On December 29th, 2013, Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #777 (San Diego CA to San Luis Obispo CA) passes the construction site for the new Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC). Located near the present Anaheim station, ARTIC is situated between Angel Stadium (MLB's Angels) and the Honda Center (NHL's Ducks) – and not far from Disneyland – and will serve Amtrak, Metrolink, transit buses, tour buses and, they hope, the planned high speed rail line connecting southern California to northern California. The 67,000-square-foot, three story terminal will cost an estimated $188 million to construct, and is scheduled to open in November 2014. To read more, go to http://www.articinfo.com/.
