Description:  The Amtrak Fortieth Anniversary Exhibit Train has set up shop in front of the former Santa Fe depot in San Diego, California, and the Amtrak Police K-9 unit is there to protect it! (Actually, the K-9 unit is there to protect all of Amtraks trains in San Diego.) Amtrak 406 is a former F40PH that has had it prime mover removed in order to convert it to a Non-Powered Control Unit (NPCU), and it is coupled to the power for this train, Dash 8-40BP 822 - both of which sport special "retro" paint schemes with lettering indicating that Amtrak is 40 years old. Besides Amtrak, this busy station also serves Coaster commuter trains and the bright red San Diego Trolleys.

Alstom-built cab car 6901 (named "Port Hueneme" - pronounced "Why-Knee-Me") will be on the point this trip, with F59PHI 457 (wearing its special Operation Lifesaver "wrap") shoving on the rear. Elsewhere on this train, volunteers are hard at work preparing the train for the annual Southern California Christmas Train. The dining car staff will have breakfast ready soon, and after the first trip carrying excited children to the Summit of nearby Cajon Pass and return, the staff will have lunch ready for the crew and volunteers before making a second trip duplicating the first.

BNSF 6686
Title:  BNSF 6686
Description:  Lunch is just about over, and the second load of children will shortly be loaded on BNSF Railways annual Southern California Christmas Train - and the sun popped out! So a few of us hopped off and headed to the west end to photograph ES44C4 6686, festooned with holiday finery for these trips. Sister ES44C4 6715 is coupled to the other end of this seven-car train, so that reversing at Cajon Pass Summit is a simple matter. Photos taken, it was time to head back to the train, just before the first passengers arrived.

BNSF 6715
Title:  BNSF 6715
Description:  The large cut that the BNSF Railways Southern California Christmas Train is about to pass was, until 2007, the western-most of the two tunnels at Alray on Cajon Pass. The tunnels were removed when this portion of the line was double-tracked (adding a third mainline to BNSFs busy crossing of this pass). When our train reached Summit, where all three mains are together again, the Christmas Train held the center main (where we would reverse direction) while another eastbound passed on our left and a westbound passed on our right. What a thrill it was to be on the business cars open platform for that!

BNSF 6715
Title:  BNSF 6715
Description:  As dawn breaks in the east, volunteers are already well underway preparing for a busy day on the roads annual Southern California Christmas Train. Snacks need to be stocked in the three cars that will be carrying local disadvantaged children, decorations adjusted and lit, balloons inflated for the balloon sculpters, costumes donned, sound systems readied, goodie bags prepared (BNSF teddy bears!) and, of course, all the standard railroad safety checks performed. In just a few hours, the first trainload of excited children and their parents will be climbing nearby Cajon Pass - for most, their first time aboard a train. And the entire process will be repeated in the afternoon on this December 17, 2011. Everyone riding the train today will leave with a smile - including the crew!

Description:  An interior view of the dining room in BNSF Railway dining car #10, the "Lake Superior", which can seat 48. Built in 1958 by Budd for the Northern Pacific (as their number 459). Following the merger of the Burlington Northern in 1970, the car was renumbered 1293. It somehow escaped being sold to Amtrak, and was later renumbered B-2 and named "Lake Superior". Remodeled in 1982, it was again renumbered by BN to BNA #26, and then in January 1999 the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway renumbered it once again to BNSF #10.

BNSF 6686
Title:  BNSF 6686
Description:  Just after sunup, a rainbow appeared - a positive omen for the days trip to Duarte to pick up a load of children from the City of Hope Hospital. BNSF Railway ES44C4 6686 will be the trailing unit on the westbound runs, and ES44C4 6715 will lead, with the engines trading duties for the eastbound runs. This BNSF Christmas Train would be the final train to operate to Duarte. In fact, a bumper needed to be removed in order to this train to get that far west, along with flagging a grade crossing that had already had its gate removed. Having ridden this line several times on Santa Fes "Chief," and later on Amtraks "Southwest Limited," and I was happy to be on the very last passenger movement on that particular line on December 18th, 2011 – even if I was dressed as a chipmunk most of the trip. (Note that the line remains in service for local freights to Irwindale, and it is only the short stretch from Irwindale to Duarte that will be removed for the MTA Gold Line extension in the coming years.)

NJTR 4124
Title:  NJTR 4124
Description:  Opened in 1907, NJ Transits Hoboken Terminal is a busy place with a very ecclectic mix of equipment: Commuter trains powered by diesel-electric locomotives and electric locomotives powered by overhead catenary, Hudson-Bergen light rail trolleys and the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) subway to Manhattan. Locomotives built by EMD, Alstom and Bombardier can all be found here, and many of the EMD units have been rebuilt by other companies. And, as might be expected of a terminal this busy, there is a maze of trackwork (as seen here) needed to manage all the daily train movements!

NYSW 3014
Title:  NYSW 3014
Description:  At New York Susquehanna & Westerns MC Yard in Bogota, New Jersey, is a four unit set of 6-axle power making up a train to head north later on the evening of December 29, 2011. Three-fourths of the power is leased power (from CEFX), with the only "home road" unit the trailing unit - NYS&W SD40T-2 3014 (ex-Southern Pacific 8321). Fortunately for the railfans present this day, a front-uncoupled shot was possible before the power backed on to its train. Interestingly for this southern California native, three of the units were former SP engines, as both the blue SD45s were as well.

AMTK 509
Title:  AMTK 509
Description:  Amtraks "Pacific Surfliners" are normally assigned 450-class F59PHI diesels, painted in "Pacific Surfliner" colors to match the cars. But on January 21, 2012, Dash 8-32BWH 509 was shoving on the rear of train #573 as it accelerated out of its stop at Fullerton, California. When first delivered in 1991 the twenty 500-class GE locomotives were regularly assigned to these trains (then called "San Diegans". In Amtraks early days, low-numbered 500-class SDP40Fs were also assigned to the "San Diegans," too.

BNSF 5507
Title:  BNSF 5507
Description:  Proof that people in car-centric southern California do ride trains, as BNSF Railway train S-LPCLBA1-18A (behind Dash 9-44CWs 5507 and 4387, with ES44DCs 7528 and 7274 on the rear) speeds by the new parking garage being built (to handle the crowds) adjacent to the Fullerton passenger station (which is in the distance, among the palm trees). Fullerton sees nearly 60 Amtrak and Metrolink passenger trains stop there each weekday and, as it is also on BNSFs busy Transcon mainline connecting Los Angeles (and the nearby ports) to Chicago, an amazing number of freight trains, too. No wonder it is such a popular railfan hangout. It is rare to wait more then twenty minutes without something coming by!
