Description:  On August 22, 2015, eastbound train 28 (the Portland OR to Spokane WA section of the "Empire Builder") has departed Portland Oregon and is 9.6 miles into its 2255-mile journey to Chicago, Illinois, as it crosses the 2,807-foot-long (856 m) BNSF Bridge 9.6 (also known as the Columbia River Railroad Bridge), opened in 1908, a series of Pratt through truss bridges with a swing section to allow river traffic to navigate the Columbia, and is about to make its first stop in Vancouver, Washington, just 2112-feet ahead. This four-car train is led by P42DC 191, and upon arrival in Spokane – another 366 miles ahead – will be combined with the Seattle section to create a much more impressive length train that continues to Chicago.

BNSF 1550 • Vancouver WA • 08/22/15
Title:  BNSF 1550 • Vancouver WA • 08/22/15
Description:  Assigned to the yard in Vancouver, Washington, is BNSF 1550 – a 61-year-old locomotive still in service on this August 22, 2015 afternoon. Built by EMD as Great Northern SD9 573, this locomotive became Burlington Northern 6100 in the CB&Q/GN/NP/SP&S merger that created the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1970. When the BN merged with the Santa Fe Railway at the end of 1996 this engine became BNSF 6100. To extend its useful life, BNSF SD9 6100 was rebuilt to an SD9-3 in early 1999, receiving a new nose and cab in the process (along with other internal upgrades). It was later renumbered BNSF 1710, and then renumbered again to BNSF 1550. In mid-2019, this engine was sent to storage in Minneapolis’ Northtown Yard, and is not likely to see service for the BNSF again.

GN 3613 • Portland OR • 08/22/15
Title:  GN 3613 • Portland OR • 08/22/15
Description:  Working in industrial northern Portland, Oregon, is GN 3613, a BNSF Railway Sw1000 that, as of December 29, 2014, began wearing the railroad’s obsolete “GN” reporting mark. (The GN mark is still owned by the BNSF, since the Great Northern was one of the BNSF’s predecessor railroads.) This is done to avoid using 5-digit numbers (which the railroad’s computers generally cannot use) and this change is made to quickly renumber older locomotives that are nearing retirement in order to clear groups of numbers to be used on new locomotives. In this particular case, while GN 3613’s reporting mark was only a year and a half old when photographed on August 22, 2015, this locomotive still has the GN marks in late 2019. While GN was one of the railroads merged to become the Burlington Northern (and, eventually, the BNSF), this locomotive was never owned by GN, as it was built in February 1972, after the BN Railroad was formed. It was originally BN 388, then BNSF 3613 and finally GN 3613.

In short order, this freight train will head south, across BNSF’s Bridge 9.6 crossing the Columbia River and the state line to get back to Oregon and PNWR home rails.

AMTK 637
Title:  AMTK 637
Description:  Constructed from 1912 to 1916, New Yorks Hell Gate Bridge is, one hundred years later, still arguably the most beautiful railroad bridge in America. The entire bridge is 17,000-feet in length, but the most famous portion is the 1,017-foot steel through arch bridge that spans the Hell Gate, a strait of the East River, between Astoria in Queens and Manhattans Randalls and Wards Islands. ("Hell Gate" is a corruption of the Dutch phrase "Hellegat," which could mean either "bright strait" or "clear opening.") The bridge is so well constructed that "Discover" magazine (February 2005) has estimated that the Hell Gate Bridge would be the last New York City bridge to collapse if humans disappeared, taking at least a millennium to do so. The double-track electrified Amtrak line on this bridge connects the former Pennsylvania Railroad with the former New Haven Railroad in order to complete the line from New York City to Boston, Massachusetts. On January 27th, 2016, one of Amtraks many "Northeast Regional" trains, running from Boston, Massachusetts, to Richmond, Virginia. Train #93 is led by a pair of Siemens ACS-64 electric locomotives, numbered 637 and 621.

Description:  Heading southbound (railroad "west") through Edison, New Jersey, and looking lonely on the busy Northeast Corridor, is Amtrak GP15D 575. This guy was going as fast as he could, but it didnt seem too fast when compared to the Amtrak trains that blow through here at 100+ mph.

AMTK 42
Title:  AMTK 42
Description:  Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #784 (Goleta to San Diego) passes through the Metrolink station in Orange, California, on April 16th, 2016. Amtrak's first Veterans engine, #42, is on the point, still wearing last Christmas' Toys For Tots banner on its nose. It was also displaying its red marker lights, too.

ATSF 3751
Title:  ATSF 3751
Description:  It takes a lot of volunteers to keep a steam locomotive operational, and following a successful weekend at Fullerton Railroad Days, Santa Fe 3751s caretakers gathered for their traditional portrait. (It also takes a lot of effort to get everyone to not be squinting while looking into the late afternoon sun!)

BNSF 4279
Title:  BNSF 4279
Description:  Following the closing on Sunday, May 1st, 2016, of Fullerton, Californias, annual Railroad Days celebration, the four mainline display pieces were coupled together to begin - eventually - the trip back to Los Angeles. Brand-new BNSF Railway ES44C4 4279 is coupled to Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751, Amtrak "Cabbage" (an F40PH diesel converted to an unpowered cab car/baggage car) 90208 and Amtrak P42DC 42. The two Amtrak pieces are both wearing the distinctive Veterans paint scheme. Nearly two hours after closing, the hundreds of spectators got what they wanted - the 3751 belching smoke and steam as this train headed east to rejoin the mainline. It would be almost another hour and a half before the real show, however, when this train would depart westbound for L.A. with the steamer providing the power. It may have been dark, but the sound was amazing!

DRR 1
Title:  DRR 1
Description:  Disneyland Railroad 4-4-0 #1, the "C.K. Holliday," was constructed by the Walt Disney Studio in 1954 and entered service on the Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad at Disneyland on Opening Day, July 17, 1955. The 36" gauge engine is named for Cyrus Kurtz Holliday, founder of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1859. It was designed to look like Walt Disney's "Lilly Belle" 1/8th scale live-steam model locomotive, which was the inspiration for Disneyland's railroad operation. DRR #1 underwent refurbishment in 2013 and was back in service in January 2016 - just in time for the temporary closing of the railroad due to the construction of the park's new Star Wars Land. The railroad will be rerouted as part of the construction. The engine was on display at the Fullerton train station, just a few miles north of Disneyland, for the annual Fullerton Railroad Days celebration.

SLRG 4137
Title:  SLRG 4137
Description:  One of the more interesting passenger trains in the United States these days is the "Hoosier State," operated four times per week between Indianapolis, Indiana, and Chicago, Illinios. Trains 850 and 851 operate on the days that Amtrak 50 and 51, the New York, NY, to Chicago "Cardinal," does not operate between these two Midwestern cities. On Saturday, July 9th, 2016, this trainset, with San Luis & Rio Grande GP40FH-2 4137 on the point, is serviced while laying over in Indy. SLRG 4137, wearing the colors of SLRG parent company Iowa Pacific Holdings (based upon the classic Illinois Central colors) was built by EMD in August 1967 as New York Central GP40 3078. It was eventually rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen with a wide-hood off an old BN F45 into NJ Transit GP40FH-2 4137.

CSXT 2275
Title:  CSXT 2275
Description:  A CSX local heads back to the yard in Terre Haute, Indiana, on July 11th, 2016. Leading the train is CSXT 2275, a road slug that began life as Chesapeake & Ohio GP35 3574. Later renumbered C&O 4414, it became CSXT 4414 when that railroad was created. In the very late 1980s, it was sent to VMV in Paducah, KY, to be rebuilt into a road slug. Slugs do not posssess a diesel prime mover (to produce electricity), and to operate they must be connected to a complete diesel-electric locomotive, called the mother, which provides the needed electrical power to operate the traction motors, and the motor controls. In this case, CSXT 2275 is drawing power from CSXT GP40-2 6442 (originally Baltimore & Ohio 4428).

AMTK 6953
Title:  AMTK 6953
Description:  When Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #579, heading from San Diego to Los Angeles, developed problems in Laguna Niguel, it sat until rescued by Metrolink train #609 (Oceanside to LA). Led by cab car AMTK 6953 "Point Conception," the now 12-car train is running late (two hours 33 minutes for Amtrak #579 and one hour 33 minutes for Metrolink #609) as it passes through Basta, in western Fullerton, at 6:22 pm. Power for the Amtrak train is F59PHI 452, which is coupled to BNSF AC4400CW 5621 leading on the Metrolink train, with Metrolink F59PHI 882 on the rear.

BNSF 5662
Title:  BNSF 5662
Description:  Running about 18 minutes late, Metrolink train 689 (Irvine to Los Angeles) approaches the station in Orange, California, on July 13, 2016. As with most Metrolink trains in 2016, a leased BNSF AC4400CW, 5662, is leading because the carrier is not trusting that the pilots on the Korean-built cab cars is sufficiently braced to allow trains to operate with a cab car leading while in push-mode.

EMDX 7101
Title:  EMDX 7101
Description:  The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach tend to have a higher than average amount of air-borne particulates, due to all the ship, truck and rail traffic required to get thousands of containers per day on their way across America. As a result, little Pacific Harbor Line, which switches the port area, is always on the lookout for new, low-emission locomotives. Testing on the PHL on July 15, 2016, is EMDX GP22ECO 7101, caught bringing a short train to an industrial section of Long Beach, California. Originally Penn Central GP40 3173 (built by EMD in October 1968), this engine became Conrail 3173 when that railroad was formed in 1976. CR sold it so KCS, as their 750, later renumbered to KCS 4750. It was later rebuilt as a "GP40-3" for Kansas City Southern, for which it wore number 4789 and, later, 2836.

BNSF 5627
Title:  BNSF 5627
Description:  Adding a BNSF freight engine to most Metrolink trains certainly conflicts with the carrier's streamlined equipment. BNSF AC4400CW 5627 is even less attractive, since its nose has been repainted, obliterating the railroad's identity from the front. This is Metrolink train 267, which will shortly depart Los Angeles Union Station for Lancaster, an L.A. suburb about 75 miles away in Californias Mojave Desert. The stories youve heard about L.A.'s urban sprawl are true...

SCAX 800
Title:  SCAX 800
Description:  While preparing for the next day's display, crews repositioned Metrolink F40PH 800 and F59PH 873, and that necessitated uncoupling the two locomotives. Once the angle cocks on the train lines were closed, F40PH 800 (originally Amtrak 396) backed away from the 873, the couplers released and the hoses stretched - until one pair of MU hoses, pulled as taught as possible, finally separated with a loud whoosh of air. Photographed at the moment of release, the effects of the sudden burst of air, disturbing the accumulated dirt and dust on these engines' pilots, creates a small cloud at the hoses' ends. Almost immediately, the other pairs of hoses followed suit, and the sound of all the briefly rushing air demonstrated why the crew was wearing ear plugs.

SCAX 905
Title:  SCAX 905
Description:  Metrolink's first (and, so far, only) F125 will be on display at Los Angeles Union Station on Monday, July 18, 2016. The engine arrived a day early to get set up. Metrolink 905 is an EMD F125 - the date on the builder's sticker is 5/1/2016, and the builder's number is 20126849-003. Rumor has it that these engines do not have blended braking (a combination of dynamic and regular braking) and, if the prime mover has a problem and shuts down, the Head End Power also quits working. That could make for some very uncomfortable passengers if the engine quits!

SCAX 905
Title:  SCAX 905
Description:  If you cross your eyes and let them go out of focus, it kind of, sort of, looks like an F-unit. Maybe. OK, not really. But, still, it is an F-unit. This is the front view of EMD's new F125 passenger diesel. So far, southern California's Metrolink is the only customer for these locomotives (and, as of July 17, 2016, they have taken delivery of only one). SCAX F125 905 is preparing for its "debut" the next day, July 18, at Los Angeles Union Station.
