Title:  AMTK 503
Description:  The parking lot at the Fullerton, California, Amtrak / Metrolink station needs additional parking, and a new parking structure is rising west of the depot (and west of Harbor Boulevard). Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #567 (San Diego to Los Angeles) is seen passing this new structure, with Dash 8-32BWH 503 for power rather than one of the normal F59PHI diesels, on March 3, 2012.

Title:  AMTK 507
Description:  Back when they were new in the early 1990s, Amtraks Dash 8-32BWH diesels hauling Horizon Fleet and Amfleet cars on the "San Diegans" was the norm. But since the delivery of dedicated "Pacific Surfliner" equipment (F59PHIs and high-level coaches, along with a name change for these trains) in 1998, this older equipment was used sparingly. But with recent schedule changes, some of these older trainsets have been pressed back into daily service, providing some variety on the California coast. On March 3, 2012, "Pacific Surfliner" #572 departs Fullerton behind Dash 8-32BWH 507 (wearing its third paint scheme) for its trip to San Diego.

Description:  BNSF Railway 7626, having come from Los Angeles (with 7823 and 4902, as train B-LACLAC3-04) to drop off some baretable intermodal cars, is done with its work and is waiting for a pair of Amtrak trains to pass before continuing its journey. The first train to pass is Amtrak #572, a "Pacific Surfliner" led by F59PHI 451. SCAX 659
Title:  SCAX 659
Description:  Friday the 30th felt more like Friday the 13th for the passengers on Metrolink train #604 (Los Angeles to Oceanside). The train arrived in Fullerton right on schedule, but an emergency with a passenger in the rear car (cab car 659) necessitated a visit from the paramedics. The train departed, finally, 25 minutes late ... Only to strike a suicidal woman just about two miles later. And that, of course, led to major disruptions for both Metrolink and Amtrak service on a busy Friday evening, with many trains detouring over the nearby Olive Subdivision (which adds a lot of time to the trip). Train #688 (Los Angeles to Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo) was stopped just behind train #604, and also got stuck behind it again following the fatal accident.

Description:  Union Pacific train ZLCAI 14 (Expedited Intermodal; Los Angeles CA to Atlanta Intermodal GA) slows to a crawl as it approaches Palomares Street in Pomona, California. It seems that half the crossing gates at this crossing were not working, so the train had to stop to allow the conductor to get off and drop a pair of fusees in the street before the train could proceed. Power for the train is a trio of GE ES44ACs: 7462 and 5492 on the headend, and 7875 as the rear DPU.

SFD 101
Title:  SFD 101
Description:  When Disneyland opened in 1955, the 36" gauge Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad operated two trains: One passenger train, and one freight (albeit with seating for passengers, of course). The original passenger cars were built with closed side and standard passenger car seating, but this design proved inadequate when the Grand Canyon diorama (promoting travel on the Santa Fe to the Grand Canyons south rim) opened. The original cars were retired by 1974, replaced with open sided cars with sideways seating. Combine 101, still lettered for the Santa Fe & Disneyland (the railroad is now just the Disneyland Railroad) made an appearance at the (nearly) annual Fullerton Railroad Days on May 5th, 2012.

Description:  While a part of New York Citys vast MTA transit system, the Staten Island Railway differs from the subway in several ways: The equipment is lettered for the SIR, the trackage is above ground, the SIR uses position signals and it is unconnected to the rest of the system. MTA 55
Title:  MTA 55
Description:  When I was first in New York City, the one time I was in the subway without my camera was the time a diesel powered work train passed by. Of all the bad luck! (Although it was on the wrong track.) Five months later, I was back, and after getting off a subway train at Borough Hall in Brooklyn, we were winding around the tunnels for the exit closest to our destination and turned the corner to discover - a diesel powered work train! I could not believe that Id stumbled upon this again, and this time with camera in hand. MTA 55 is a 45-ton GE diesel, one of six R-41 class diesels built from December 1967 through February 1968. We exited here to go to the MTAs museum, whose collection includes - ironically - another of these diminutive GEs (in that case, a 35-tonner)!

MTA 7151
Title:  MTA 7151
Description:  14th Street/Union Square is the New York subways fourth busiest station, because it is a transfer point for 7 lines (the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q and R trains). In 2011, almost 35,000,000 riders used this station. A 4 Train (Lexington Avenue Express), made up of R142 cars (built by Bombardier in the early 2000s), comes to a stop on its way north to Woodlawn. This station is a labrynth of stairways, walkways and bridges, and taking the time to stop and watch the various surges of commuters as trains arrive and depart is fascinating in itself.

UP 9908
Title:  UP 9908
Description:  How the mighty have fallen ... This trackage, threading between a stand of palm trees and a row of eucalyptus, is Union Pacifics San Pedro Subdivision. It was, before the UP acquired the Southern Pacific, the UPs mainline to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach (originally constructed by UP predecessor Los Angeles Terminal Railway). These days, it see mainly locals and trains such as this - the IWALBR 02, which is bringing empty well cars from Walker (a siding on the border of the cities of Commerce and Bell) to Long Beachs ICTF intermodal yard. UP SD59M-2 9908, which UP calls SD59MX, was formerly a mainline engine - SD60M 6341 - now relegated to local service. Rebuilt by original builder EMD, these engines are equipped with an experimental exhaust aftertreatment, and are fueled only with ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel and are restricted to service in California only.
