UTAX 9
Title:  UTAX 9
Description:  The Salt Lake City area has experienced a commuter rail renaissance lately, with three TRAX light rail lines in operation and Front Runner heavy rail commuter trains – all operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). On a stormy August 10, 2012, afternoon, Front Runner train #4 passes under the six-track signal bridge and across the grade crossing at W 400 N (SLC is on the only city I know of that names their streets in such a manner) as it approaches Union Pacifics North Yard. UTAX MP36PH-3C 9, built by Motive Power Industries (Boise, ID) leads coach 201 and cab cars 113 and 120 as the train makes its way from downtown Salt Lake northward to Ogden.

UP 5779
Title:  UP 5779
Description:  A trainload of coal from the West Elk Mine at Arco, Colorado, passes by the iconic Castle Rock, which was clearly visible in photos of the early transcontinental railway in the 1860s. Lead engine 5779, a GE-built AC4400CW, is quite a bit different than the 4-4-0s and 2-8-0s and other early steam locomotives that have passed by this rock formation for the past 144 years! However, the name on the locomotives - Union Pacific - remains unchanged.

UTAX 1136
Title:  UTAX 1136
Description:  Utah Transit Authority operates three light rail lines in the Salt Lake City area. Green Line (West Valley to downtown Salt Lake City) train 42, made up of Siemens S70 LRVs 1136 and 1127, has just departed the City Center Station and is rounding the curve next to the largest Latter Day Saints (Mormon) temple in downtown Salt Lake City. The Temple took 40 years to construct (1853 through 1893) and much of the granite used in its construction originated in a quarry in Little Cottonwood Canyon. The granite was then transported the Jordan Valley Railroad to a connection with the Union Pacific in Sandy, Utah, which then moved it a few miles north to the temples site. (This former UP trackage is now the UTAs Blue Line, connecting Sandy and SLC.)

SCAX 894
Title:  SCAX 894
Description:  On a hot, muggy August 28th, 2012, Metrolink train 640, heading from Los Angeles to Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo, has been delayed in Orange, California, due to doors that became inoperable. The train sat for 25 minutes while the crew worked on the problem, which caused two other southbounds behind it to be delayed as well (although they werent as late). The former Santa Fe station on the east side of the mainline was converted to a restaurant years ago, and is now thriving as a part of the Rubys Diner chain. The interior is nicely decorated in a railroad theme (mainly, but not exclusively, Santa Fe), including some elements copied from Los Angeles Union Station. And there is a patio for trackside dining as well.

UPY 2737
Title:  UPY 2737
Description:  Union Pacifics Reyes Switcher (LOG11R 29) picks up tank cars from Cargill Milling in Lynwood, California (hometown of "Weird" Al Yankovic!) on August 29, 2012. Power for the train is a pair of NRE-built 3GS21B gensets, UPY 2737 and 2756 - and the conductor wanted me to be sure to include his comment that "these are the worst engines ever built." Note that lead engine 2737 has an aluminum apparatus on one of the exhaust stacks. The Reyes Switcher operates out of Mead Yard, on the border of Long Beach and Wilmington, and this job serves Compton, Rancho Dominguez, and Lynwood via the Alameda Corridor and the Patata Industrial Lead, working along Alameda Street north of Dominguez on the Dolores Industrial Lead as far as CP Compton. It also works the Reyes Spurs along the Del Amo Industrial Lead. (Thanks to Charles Freericks for the info on this local.)

AMTK 505
Title:  AMTK 505
Description:  Due to trackwork on September 8th, 2012 (new switches being installed at CP Stadium in Anaheim), Amtrak's "Pacific Surfliners" detoured on the Olive Subdivision between Orange and Atwood (Placentia), at which point they reversed direction and headed to Fullerton. Not exactly rare mileage (thanks to Metrolink), catching "Surfliners" on these lines is somewhat rare. Train 566 is seen crossing the Santa Ana River on the Olive Sub (and also crossing from Anaheim to Orange) on its way to Oceanside, with Dash 8-32BWH 505 and F59PHI 450 powering the train. (There was also trackwork going on south of Oceanside, so these trains were only operating between L.A. and Oceanside, rather than going all the way to San Diego.)

BNSF 7386
Title:  BNSF 7386
Description:  At the western portion of BNSF Railway's Transcon line between Chicago and Los Angeles, train S-LPCLBJ1-05A (Intermodal Stacks; originating at Logistics Park in Chicago IL headed for Pier J at the port of Long Beach CA) hustles through Atwood (the old Santa Fe station name which is now part of Placentia), California. ES44DCs 7386 and 7481 are on the headend, and ES44DC 7443 and ES44C4 6848 are the rear Distributed Power Units (DPU), pulling a long string of well cars loaded with containers. (The QZ on the Whistle Post sign indicates that this is a "Quiet Zone" and the train is not allowed to whistle for grade crossings, as it upsets the delicate sensibilities of the NIMBYs who live alongside the mainline.)

BNSF 7756
Title:  BNSF 7756
Description:  On the BNSF in the greater Los Angeles area, the vast majority of freight trains are intermodal (and mainly double-stacks). But a "real" freight operates each way each day, ferrying non-containerized goods between Watson (Wilmington CA) and Barstow CA. On September 8th, 2012, the westbound version of this train, the M-BARWAT1-08A (Regular Merchandise; Barstow to Watson) was seen passing through the old Santa Fe station of Atwood in Placentia. The power is the usual 7700-series ES44DCs, along with a treat - GP60M 112 (GP60Ms are used in local service in southern California). While the WATBAR/BARWAT trains are made up of a variety of freight cars (box cars, gondolas, open and covered hoppers, tank cars, flats, etc.) today's train is almost entirely made up of tank cars, with a few covered hoppers interspersed among them. (At first glance, I thought it might be an ethanol train, although there was too much tank car variety for that.) The diverging mainline in the foreground is Metrolink's Olive Subdivision, which heads south to Orange, where it joins the old Santa Fe Surf Line to San Diego.

AMTK 184
Title:  AMTK 184
Description:  The big news in Fullerton on Friday, December 28th, 2012, was that the westbound "Southwest Chief" was running nearly 13 hours late, and had a BNSF SD70MAC on the point. The surprise that evening, though, was just before #3 arrived, #4, the eastbound "Southwest Chief," arrived (on time!) with one of Amtraks Heritage diesels, P42DC 184, on the point.

BNSF 9868
Title:  BNSF 9868
Description:  Amtrak train #3, the westbound "Southwest Chief," has arrived in Fullerton just a little behind "the advertised" -- Due to depart Fullerton, California, at 6:34 am, on December 28th, 2012, the train departed Fullerton at 7:23 PM! The train lost three hours due to engine problems between La Junta and Trinidad, Colorado, (resulting in BNSF loaning a freight engine, SD70MAC 9868, to assist Amtrak P42DC 113 and Dash 8-32BWH 500), then three and a half hours to run from Lamy, New Mexico, to Albuquerque. And as the old saying goes ("late trains just keep getting later"), this train lost more time due to a four-hour stop at Albuquerque! Thanks to the internet, word was out about the SD70MAC, a rare bird in California, and the station platform was swarming with railfans!

UP 2159
Title:  UP 2159
Description:  A set of "Anaheim Hauler" power lays over in Anaheim, California, on Sunday, January 6th, 2013. A pair of SD60s (2159, ex-6004, and 2225, ex-6070) bracket SD59M-2 9909 (ex-SD60M 2508, nee-6354). The "Anaheim Hauler" ferries cars from West Colton Yard in Bloomington to West Anaheim Yard in Anaheim. (SD59M-2s are SD60Ms rebuilt by EMD, but UP calls them SD59MX diesels. Apparenlty, EMD's designation isn't good enough.)

AMTK 91

Description:  Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #583 (San Diego to Los Angeles) arrived at Santa Ana, California, 45 minutes late on January 15th, 2013. But, since I wasn't a passenger, I didn't mind as it arrived as the sunset was fading, making for a shot that is better than if it had been on time! As the "Surfliners" regular F59PHIs are cycled through Amtrak's Beech Grove Shops for heavy maintenance, a few P42DCs are filling in, such as number 91 on train 583.

AMTK 164
Title:  AMTK 164
Description:  Amtrak #3 is running nearly 3 hours late - it normally crosses southern California's Cajon Pass just before sunup - which gives its passengers a look at the snowfall the accumulated overnight. The "Southwest Chief" originated in Chicago, and at this point the train is 90 miles from its final destination in Los Angeles. P42DCs 164 and 48 are pulling the eight car train.

Description:  It doesn't look very snowy here, as what snow fell overnight was quickly melting (particularly on the sunny sides of the chaparral), but this 3 hour late Amtrak #3, the westbound "Southwest Chief," was giving passengers a view that they don't often get on Cajon Pass - snow! This train had just 8 cars on this day, and was approximately 100 miles from its final destination of Los Angeles. The retaining walls and trees seen behind the train are the well-known railfan "oasis" Hill 582, located at Milepost 58.2 and providing a nice spot in which to sit on a hot day, thanks to those trees.

BNSF 7209
Title:  BNSF 7209
Description:  On February 9th, 2013, BNSF Railway train Z-SBDALT9-09A, a 6526' (without locomotives, 6891' with them), 4275 ton intermodal train heading from San Bernardino CA to Alliance TX, threads its way around the curves as it grinds its way up southern California's Cajon Pass. Just beyond this crossing of Cajon Creek is the site of the old Cajon station, where the three BNSF mainlines split, with two of them taking a slightly more circuitous route up the hill. A quartet of modern GE power is on the headend: ES44DC 7209, ES44C4 6833, Dash 9-44CW 5072 and ES44DC 7445. The elevation here is just under 3000', and there is a light dusting of snow from the previous night's storm.
