Yard and tracks at Elk Run Jct., WV
Title:  Yard and tracks at Elk Run Jct., WV
Description:  A six-track or more yard with a few buildings typify C&O operations in southern West Virginia. The structure on the right may have been for yard crews to keep warm--look at the stove and pile of coal! It features standard ship-lap siding. The larger building on the left was the yard office and scalehouse, IIRC. Notice the bay window and board-and-batten construction of the yard office

Yard shanty, Elk Run Jct
Title:  Yard shanty, Elk Run Jct
Description:  This structure was built across the tracks from the scalehouse/yard office in Elk Run Junction, WV, featuring standard ship-lap siding. The front is open but I don't remember if it had any kind of framing on the front. As best I recall, the rear of this building was blank but it may have had a small window. There are a couple of tracks behind this building, but the tracks had not been used in quite some time, apparently. I love that stove at the front! This image came from an old Kodak 126 print. As the color, dyes, etc., had faded, I used computer software to make the gray as close as I could remember. C&O used an almost battleship gray color for a lot of buildings. Also, I had never noticed the conduit running along the left edge of the wall. I don't recall what it was used for, though. This view looks east and was taken in the afternoon, apparently, from the shadow on the wall. This would be a very easy building to model!

HO Cabin, looking northwest, showing stairs
Title:  HO Cabin, looking northwest, showing stairs
Description:  HO Cabin was located near Third Street and Seventh Avenue in Huntington, WV, just west of the passenger station. It was torn down some years ago. My dad used to work here and at other cabins as well. The semaphore, serving as a train order signal, is in the vertical position to indicate no train orders at this time. Date of photo unknown.

HO Cabin, looking northeast
Title:  HO Cabin, looking northeast
Description:  The other side of HO Cabin, which has now been demolished. The semaphore blades, used as a train order signal, are painted red with a white square on one side and a much duller shade on the other. Date is a guess as I honestly don't remember when I took this photo.

Old boxcar used for office or storage
Title:  Old boxcar used for office or storage
Description:  This retired boxcar found new life as an office or storage facility near the former C&O's Huntington, WV yards, The date is approximate and this structure has since been removed. I don't have any other information, just that I thought, "why not grab a photo?"

Joint C&O-N&W freight house
Title:  Joint C&O-N&W freight house
Description:  This structure served as the joint C&O-N&W freight house in Beckley, WV. I took the photo in March 1979 but I don't remember which day. The photo software did some rather creative adjusting: the truck is actually a gold or butterscotch color, and the freight house is the standard C&O grey, close to a battleship grey, as I recall. With little overhang, and simple board-and-batten construction, this might be a good building to model from scratch. Sadly, I don't recall how long the building was, but I would estimate 50 to 65 feet. Other details include the smokejack, seen just left of the utility pole; and the board (fascia? wainscot?) below the windows. Even though I took this picture in the mid-to late afternoon, the shades are all still at the same level, extending to the middle of the window. Attention to detail at its best!

Site of former depot
Title:  Site of former depot
Description:  The foundation is all that remains of the former C&O depot near Milton, WV on a June evening in 1979. I had never noticed the bicycle before. The track is somewhat lower than the two mainline tracks on the left of the photo. Date is approximate.

C&O R-O-W marker
Title:  C&O R-O-W marker
Description:  This concrete post or marker was located on the south side of the tracks, near HO Cabin in Huntington, WV. I literally stumbled onto it while trying to find a good place to take pictures! Notice how the "C&O" lettering was pressed into, or "recessed", into the face of the concrete. I've never seen anything like this one on any other line.

C&O R-O-W marker, other side
Title:  C&O R-O-W marker, other side
Description:  This marker has R of W cast into the concrete. I don't recall if this was a separate or second marker, or if it had "C&O" on one side and "R of W" on the other. Regardless, these would be relatively easy to model, showing the limits to the right of way on your model railroad!

DK Cabin, straight-on view
Title:  DK Cabin, straight-on view
Description:  This view came from the time I had obtained permission to visit the cab of Chessie System GP40-2 #4338. You may be able to see the semaphore signal's blades at the rightmost edge of the building. Dad used to work at this very signal tower (Cabin, on the C&O) and this is a reminder to me of the countless hours he spent there, doing his part to keep the railroad running smoothly. The "operator" is sitting at the middle window, with the CTC panel behind him (away from the tracks).

DK Cabin, looking southwest
Title:  DK Cabin, looking southwest
Description:  This photo was taken from Chessie System 4338, a GP40-2. We had obtained permission to come aboard the engine for a brief period of time. One can see the overall spaciousness and yet busy-ness of a typical signal tower, called cabins on the C&O. My dad worked several times at this very tower!

DK Cabin, looking west
Title:  DK Cabin, looking west
Description:  My dad used to work here! DK cabin looks north towards the locomotive shops and the main line of the C&O Railway. Unlike many of C&O's cabins (their term for signal towers), this one is made of a beige brick. Most of the other ones I've seen were either red brick or wood frame in construction. Compare this view of DK Cabin with the photo of HO Cabin, a couple of miles further west. You can't see it from here but there was an upper-quadrant semaphore signal to indicate to train crews if there were train orders. This structure is still standing but it's not as easy to get to these days.

Former C&O yard office, looking north
Title:  Former C&O yard office, looking north
Description:  This yard office, no longer standing at this location, is on the north side of 8th Avenue in Huntington, WV. Hal Greer Blvd., originally 16th Street, is the road running under the viaduct, which is in clear view. The staircase gave easy access to the top floor, where the yardmaster used to work.

Rear view of yard office
Title:  Rear view of yard office
Description:  This view looks nearly due south. This is probably the best view or angle to see the rather substantial steel work to support the upper portion. I don't recall if these supports were columns or I-beams after all these years.

Description:  This view shows the east end and side of the yard office, and the north (back) side. I hadn't noticed that small window and the air conditioner in the yard office's north wall.

Storage building beneath yard office
Title:  Storage building beneath yard office
Description:  This building was located under the yard office (tower?). It looks to be of standard "ship-lap" frame construction. The color was the standard C&O grey, which looked mighty close to "battleship" gray to me. I have no idea what this building was used for.

Ex-C&O yard, photo 1
Title:  Ex-C&O yard, photo 1
Description:  Handley, WV was once a bustling facility for the former C&O. In steam days, there was a coaling tower (still standing), water tower, roundhouse and other maintenance facilities. Several tracks had been removed by August 1987 (date uncertain); some of these led to the diesel fueling racks. The tower (cabin, on C&O) had a downstairs office and one upstairs. Dad used to work as an "operator" in the downstairs office and he said the yardmaster worked in the upstairs office. This view looks west. West Virginia highway 61 is barely visible to the left.

Ex C&O yard, photo 2
Title:  Ex C&O yard, photo 2
Description:  Compare this photo with the other one of the former C&O yard at Handley, WV. Still looking west, I was standing at a more level place this time. Several tracks are visible but IIRC CSX (by this time) was only using a few. Many hoppers are still in the yard, visible in the background. Also note what was left of the diesel fueling racks in front of the former coaling tower.

Gauley Bridge office, looking west
Title:  Gauley Bridge office, looking west
Description:  C&O had (has?) a line that branched off from the main tracks, crossed the New River and headed north out of Gauley Bridge, WV. As late as the early 80's, this station had a more or less dedicated engine (usually a GP9) and plenty of hopper cars. There was no engine and there weren't any cars on this August day in 1987. I love the "board-and-batten" construction, typical of many C&O structures. The paint, although beginning to fade, was apparently C&O's standard gray color, rather like battleship gray to my untrained eye!

Gauley Bridge office, looking east
Title:  Gauley Bridge office, looking east
Description:  I ran out of color film and wound up shooting several pictures in black and white. This view looks east, showing the brush perhaps trying to overtake the building (?) and a refrigerator! The "fridge" had a Chessie-cat stencil applied to the top! There is also a fire extiguisher in a protective box on the light post, to the left in this picture.

Crossties as a retaining wall
Title:  Crossties as a retaining wall
Description:  Crossties as a retaining wall are right there as part of the Gauley Bridge line. This particular line was lightly utilized and as a result, this retaining wall doesn't have a lot of "support". Another photo in this album shows portions of old rail driven into the ground to provide additional support. This view looks north across US Hwy 60, the road in the foreground.

Gauley Bridge station, south-west edge
Title:  Gauley Bridge station, south-west edge
Description:  Apparently the old refrigerator has been put out to pasture! Take a look at the Chessie-cat logo painted onto the top of the "fridge". Is that an old water pump in the background? Also, the roof appears to be rolled roofing instead of shingles.

More crossties used for a retaining wall, looking west
Title:  More crossties used for a retaining wall, looking west
Description:  Even though this picture was taken in August 1987, apparently there had been a dry spell in WV--take a look at the trees, already beginning to change to fall colors. There are other old crossties being used as a retaining wall but notice how C&O used lengths of old rail, driving them into the ground, as supports. There is also a stairway, of sorts, leading from the road to the tracks--notice the handrail, looking like a couple lengths of 1 X 6 boards attached to some 2 X 4's. This view looks north-west, and US 60 is the road in the foreground.

Sand house?
Title:  Sand house?
Description:  Railroad Model Craftsman magazine published a "how-to" feature on railroad structures like sandhouses, etc., many years ago. This set of structures looks like a much smaller operation. I don't know what was insde the two gray buildings but the middle, red-painted building, has, perhaps, more or less the same function as the sand storage building of the article. If any of you have additional information, please share it with us if at all possible. At the time I took this photo, 8/1987, there was still a track in front of these buildings but it's just barely visible.
