Description:  It's mid-afternoon and Louisville & Nashville J3 Mikado 1518 is pulling train No. 7 -- the all-stops local from Montgomery -- along the Mississippi River wharves and into the railroad's Canal Street Station. The 1518 was one of 93 USRA (United States Railroad Administration) light 2-8-2's on the L&N and the first of 65 built for the railroad by Alco between 1920 and 1923. J3's were the heaviest steam locomotives operated into New Orleans by the L&N. The 1518 was retired on 29 January 1952. Train No. 7 was officially dieselized -- with FP7A's -- on 27 July 1951 and was discontinued in September 1953. (approximate date)

Description:  Louisville & Nashville class J-3 2-8-2 1518 and an auxiliary water car were photographed next to the turntable at the railroad’s Julia Street Yard in New Orleans This photo was taken on 28 August 1951, near the end of L&N steam operations into the Crescent City. The class J-3 was the standard USRA Light Mikado and, at 292,000 pounds, were the heaviest steam locomotives used on the line between Mobile and New Orleans. The 1518 had been built by Alco in 1920 and was retired on 29 January 1952.

It now sits in what apprears to be a storage or scrap line now.

Description:  A northbound Louisville & Nashville train consisting of J-3 class 2-8-2 1527, an auxiliary water car and a caboose was passing the SCHOEN MORTUARY in the 500-block of Elysian Fields Avenue. The crew had gone on duty at JULIA STREET YARD but there were no cars for the train, so they were running as a caboose hop to GENTILLY YARD for their cars before continuing on to Mobile. Description:  Louisville & Nashville J-3 class 2-8-2 1548 was on a southbound train passing the Abaunza Steamship Agency wharf at the foot of Dumaine Street in New Orleans. The train had left its cars at GENTILLY YARD, on the east side of the city, and was heading for JULIA STREET YARD, where the crew would go off duty. L&N Mikado 1580
Title:  L&N Mikado 1580
Description:  Louisville & Nashville J-3 class Mikado 1580 had just crossed the New Orleans Terminal Co. (Southern Railway) tracks at N.O.T. Tower (milepost 803.7) and was crossing the Marigny Canal. The engine had set out its cars at Gentilly Yard (milepost 800.4), and was on its way to Julia Street Yard (milepost 806.4) - along with an auxiliary water car and caboose 683 - where the crew would tie up. The roof of N.O.T. Tower can be seen above the caboose. The 1580 was one of 93 USRA-design light Mikados on the L&N. The 1500-1517 were built by Lima in 1919, while the 1518-1592 were built by Alco between 1920 and 1923. The 1580 was retired on 12 December 1951. (approximate day of photo)

Description:  Louisville & Nashville J-3 class 2-8-2 1586 was arriving at the New Orleans station with southbound train No. 7, the long-distance local from Montgomery, Alabama. The track the photographer was standing on belonged to Southern Pacific (Texas & New Orleans), as did the track to the right, then there were two L&N tracks and then several tracks belonging to the New Orleans Public Belt. Description:  Long before an NYC F7A carried the number NYC 1736, this ALCo-Schenectady built 2-8-2 Mikado wore the number. Originally delivered in September of 1918 as Toledo & Ohio Central #9736 (serial # 59552), it was reunumbered in August of 1936 to NYC 1736 and later in June of 1951, it was again renumbered to NYC 6329. The loco was finally retired in November of 1954 and scrapped.
